What Is Botox?
Botox is a drug that comes from the byproduct of the bacterium Clostridium botulinum. Used in small, diluted amounts, scientists have discovered that this drug can be very useful for treating different health issues including: muscle stiffness, muscle spasms, excessive sweating, overactive bladder and chronic migraines. What Botox may be most popular for, however, is its cosmetic success in treating wrinkles and facial creases.
When injected into the face, Botox blocks the signals between the nerves and muscles, causing a temporary paralysis. The muscles treated with Botox will not be able to contract, which will cause the wrinkles to relax. This treatment is most commonly used on forehead lines, lines around the eyes and frown lines. Botox will have no effect on wrinkles and creases caused by gravity and sun damage.
Botox and You
There are many things to consider when deciding to get Botox. There are both great benefits and risks that come with this procedure. It is good to know that Botox is only a temporary solution—treatments only last about three to six months. Even more, Botox cannot treat every type of wrinkle, and is only good for dynamic wrinkles.
