FAQs About Mommy Makeover Surgery: What You Need to Know
Pregnancy is a beautiful time in a woman’s life, but it can take a huge toll on our bodies, affecting breasts, stomachs, and hips. During pregnancy or the few months following childbirth, many mothers long for their pre-pregnancy body back. While many are able to achieve this through vigorous diet and exercise or through non-invasive cosmetic procedures and treatments, a mommy makeover may be just what a new mom needs to get that pre-pregnancy look back.
What is a Mommy Makeover?
Plastic surgeons refer to a mommy makeover as a single surgery that treats all the areas in a post-pregnancy woman’s body that she would like changed. This includes procedures such as tummy tucks, breast augmentation, and liposuction. Other non-invasive procedures such as skin tightening and smoothening can be combined into a mommy makeover as well. Mommy Makeovers can be custom designed to suit the individual mother, however, common procedures that are typically performed during a Mommy Makeover include:
- Tummy Tuck/Mini Tummy Tuck
- Breast Lift
- Breast Reduction
- Breast Augmentation
- Thigh Lift
- Skin Resurfacing/Skin Tightening
Do All of the Procedures for a Mommy Makeover Have to be Done All at Once?
No, Mommy Makeover procedures can certainly be spread out during different stages or sessions, depending on the areas that need to be treated. For example, a tummy tuck with liposuction to the flanks or “love handles” and breast procedures are usually done at the same time. The benefit of having one surgery is one recovery. Therefore we typically try to group certain procedures together so that you are able to achieve optimal results with one recovery process. During consultation, Dr. Cho will discuss any questions you may have regarding surgery, your recovery process, and results you may expect after your procedures. This will help you can make the decision that is right for you.
Who is a Good Candidate for a Mommy Makeover?
Mommy Makeovers are ideal for women who are finished having children. A Mommy Makeover will not prevent you from having children later on nor will it harm the growing baby in any way. It can reverse the results of the cosmetic surgery during childbearing, which may leave you wanting to revisit Mommy Makeover at that time. With safety always being priority, it is best to make sure that you are healthy to proceed with surgery. Dr. Cho may require medical clearance or additional testing based on your medical background to ensure your safety and optimal results.
Should I Lose Weight Before a Mommy Makeover?
There isn’t necessarily an ideal weight to reach for a Mommy Makeover. However, candidates should be at or close to their ideal weight, one that they can keep stable, as well have a healthy body mass index (BMI). Significantly losing or gaining weight after a Mommy Makeover surgery can affect results and may require revisions later on.
What is the Recovery Time for a Mommy Makeover?
Since procedures are usually performed all at once during a Mommy Makeover, there will only be one significant recovery period. Most patients take two weeks off work; this will vary depending on lifestyle and job duties. The first week is usually the most challenging, we suggest evaluating your individual needs. If you have small children, make sure someone will be available to help during your recovery process. While you will continue to feel improvement daily most patients do not return to normal day to day activities for 2-3 weeks. You will be able to exercise after six weeks; or when you have been cleared by your surgeon to return to full activity based on your personal recovery. Your doctor will provide you with all the post-surgical instructions you need to follow for optimal recovery as well as options to help limit scaring or complication.
